Prickly Ash
(Zanthoxylum americanum)

COMMON NAMES:  Toothache bush, toothache tree, yellow wood.
MEDICINAL PART:  Bark, fruit.
DESCRIPTION:  Prickly ash is a native North American shrub or tree, growing form 10 to 25 feet high in damp soils from Canada to Virginia and Nebraska.  As the name indicates, the branches bear prickles up to 1/2 inch long.  The leaces are alrenate and oddpinnate, with 5 to 11 ovate or elliptic leaflets that are softly hairy beneath.  Small, yellowish-green flowers grow in axillary clusters during April and May, before the leaves appear.  The fruit is a small, berry-like capsule containing one or more shiny black seeds.
