Uva Ursi
(Arctostaphylos uva-ursi)
COMMON NAMES: Bearberry,
upland cranberry, universe vine, mountain cranberry, mountain box, wild
cranberry, bear’s grape, kinpikinn ick, mealberry, sagckhomi.
MEDICINAL PART: Leaves.
DESCRIPTION: Diuretic,
astringent, nephreticum, tonic.
PROPERTIES AND USES:
Useful in diabetes, Bright’s disease, and all kidney troubles. Excellent
remedy for desyntery, piles, hemorrhoids, excessive menstration, for the
spleen, liver, pancreas, and when there are mucous discharges from the
bladder with pus and blood. Excellent in gonorrhea, ulceration of
the neck of the womb, and other female troubles.
For chronic urinary problems,
this herb can be safely used on a continuing basis and in high doses.
Used in traditional medicine
in the Middle Ages, bearberry is a diuretic herb. In the body the
arbutin in the plant converts to hydroquinone, a urinary disinfectant.
This is especially effective with alkaline urine, which can be achieved
by observing a vegetarian diet. Caution: Long-term use of bearberry
may produce toxic effects, since large doses of hydroquinone are poisonous.
Normal medicinal use, however, is perfectly safe.
PREPERATION AND DOSAGE:
Tea: Steep 1 tsp. in
a pint of boiling water for 30 mintes. Drink 1/2 cupful every 30
minutes. Also can be used as a douche.
